User research

AI can't do the interview for you — but it can design the whole study in a minute. This is my pre-flight before any discovery sprint; the "no leading questions" clause alone has saved me from myself many times. Replace [problem/feature] with yours.

The prompt

"Design a user research plan for [problem/feature]: research questions, ideal participant profile, interview script (open-ended, no leading questions), and how to synthesize findings into themes ranked by frequency and impact."

Why it works

  • Research questions ≠ interview questions. Separating them keeps the study honest — you know what you're trying to learn before you script how to ask.
  • "Open-ended, no leading questions" kills the classic trap: "wouldn't it be great if…?" always gets a yes and teaches you nothing.
  • Synthesis is specified upfront — themes ranked by frequency and impact — so five interviews become a prioritization input, not a pile of anecdotes.

Example result

Condensed sample with [problem/feature] = "restaurant owners rarely respond to their Google reviews":

RESEARCH PLAN — WHY OWNERS DON'T RESPOND TO REVIEWS

Research questions. RQ1: Do owners see reviews as marketing, support, or noise? RQ2: What interrupts the response habit — time, language, tooling? RQ3: What would make responding feel worth it?
Participants. 6–8 single-location owners, 50+ reviews on Google, mix of responders and non-responders; exclude anyone with a marketing agency.
Script (excerpt). "Walk me through the last time you read a review of your restaurant. What happened next?" · "Show me where reviews fit in your day." · Probe: "You said 'later' — when is later, usually?" (never: "would you use a tool that…")
Synthesis. Code transcripts into themes; rank by frequency (how many raised it) × impact (how strongly it blocks responding); attach one verbatim quote per theme.
